Jim Rothnie paints a variety of subjects, especially lowcountry landscapes and street scenes, in oils, acrylics, and watercolors.
His 2003 show at the Charles Street Gallery exhibited 30 pieces executed using a unique technique: the paint was applied using an ordinary kitchen sponge rather than a brush. This tool imparts an airy impression to the surface, producing a pointillist-like product. In other works, his paintings capture the light in a subject in a contemporary impressionist style.
By training, Jim Rothnie is a computer scientist who holds a Ph.D. from MIT. For twenty-five years he has worked in the computer industry by week and painted on Sundays. Since retiring to Beaufort in 2002 he has been a seven-day per week painter focused on capturing the beauty of coastal South Carolina.
